Arc flash is one of the most dangerous electrical hazards. These sudden explosions of energy injure tens of thousands of people each year. The flash can reach about 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit – four times hotter than the surface of the sun. It can cause severe burns from several meters away, and make clothing or other materials melt onto the skin or catch fire. Even more dangerously, if the arc jumps to a person, it can cause electric shock or electrocution.
