HFC-227ea (aka FM200) and FK-5-1-12 (aka NOVEC) are clean fire extinguishing agents widely used in fire protection applications and generally recognized as suitable alternatives to Halon. They are applied in total flooding and inerting systems, subject to appropriate system design and application conditions.
PRO™227 HFC-227ea and PRO™5112 FK-5-1-12 fire suppression systems are intended for use in normally or intermittently occupied spaces, provided they are designed, installed, and maintained in accordance with applicable standards, codes, and project requirements. Under typical design conditions, these systems may achieve the required extinguishing concentration within a short discharge time to support the suppression of fires involving ordinary combustibles, electrical equipment, and flammable liquids.
The systems are designed to help reduce potential damage associated with water-based fire suppression methods by enabling early fire control. Early suppression may contribute to improved life safety, reduced property damage, and minimized business interruption. Actual performance depends on factors including system design, installation, maintenance, enclosure integrity, and environmental conditions.
HFC-227ea and FK-5-1-12 have been evaluated by independent certification bodies and are recognized by organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and approved by Factory Mutual (FM), subject to specific listings. The agents are included in the U.S. EPA SNAP program as acceptable alternatives to Halon 1301 for total flooding applications.
Both agents have zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and are addressed in NFPA 2001 and applicable ISO Clean Agent Standards. The systems may be applied within the limits specified by EN 15004-1 and NFPA 2001, when properly designed and implemented.
