The Red Cross is the world's largest aid organization. It has existed for 160 years and is represented as a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society in 192 nations. Millions of members and volunteers as well as hundreds of thousands of employees are working in the name of the Red Cross every day, aiming to support and help their fellow human beings. In Germany alone, the Red Cross is active in a wide variety of social fields, including rescue services, civil protection, first aid courses, blood donation, help for people in need, elderly care as well as childcare. The German Red Cross has a federal structure and consists of the Federal Association based in Berlin, 19 state associations and the Association of Sisterhoods of the German Red Cross, which includes 33 sisterhoods. The DRK-Landesverband Niedersachsen (German Red Cross Association of Lower Saxony) includes 45 district associations and 1,046 local associations.
