The control center of tomorrow at INTERSCHUTZ 2026
Integrated control centers for fire services, emergency medical services, and civil protection are facing increasingly complex tasks that go far beyond the traditional dispatching of emergency responders. At INTERSCHUTZ 2026 (June 1-6 in Hannover, Germany), it becomes clear how control centers are evolving both technologically and organizationally.

“Communication and control center technology is therefore one of the key focus areas of the world’s leading trade fair,” says Thilo Horstmann, Head of INTERSCHUTZat Deutsche Messe AG. “A major aspect here is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). Modern control centers must assess large volumes of information in real time, coordinate different stakeholders, and at the same time deal with technical disruptions, staff shortages, and rising public expectations.”
At the Smart Public Safety Hub in Hall 16, innovative partners from the public sector demonstrate, using intelligent systems and state-of-the-art technologies, how a shared situational picture can be created within five minutes. In emergency situations, responders must be able to act quickly and prudently while being supplied with all relevant information simultaneously. Today, this is only possible if the digital interconnection of emergency responders functions reliably and digital tools are available. Companies such as Eurocommand and Esri are exemplary in this regard.
Innovative solutions with AI – but people remain at the center
Control centers are already increasingly using AI-supported assistance systems, as confirmed by the Fachverband Leitstellen e. V., which will present its work at INTERSCHUTZ in Hall 16. In the future, such assistance systems will support dispatchers, for example, in supplementing standardized emergency call interrogation, detecting critical keywords in emergency calls, assessing incident situations, or prioritizing dispatch codes.
Despite all technological advancements, experts emphasize that people will remain at the center in the future - an aspect that INTERSCHUTZ also aims to convey. Future technologies are intended to support dispatchers, not replace them. Ergonomic workstations, intelligent user interfaces, and digital assistance systems help reduce stress and improve decision-making quality, stakeholders emphasize.
“The traditional emergency phone call is being complemented by new communication channels,” explains Marc Gistrichovsky, Chairman of the Fachverband Leitstellen. “Through what is known as ‘Next Generation 112,’ photos, videos, or text messages will in future need to be transmitted to the control center in real time. This allows emergency responders to gain a better situational overview even before arrival. This is complemented by automatic location transmission and, in the future, by data from vehicles, wearables, or medical devices.”
Control centers are part of critical infrastructure. Experts are therefore also paying close attention to exhibitors’ current solutions for scenarios such as power outages, cyberattacks, or major incident situations. “Redundant systems, secure cloud solutions, backup power supplies, robust information security management, and autonomous communication channels ensure that control centers remain operational even in exceptional situations,” emphasizes Marc Gistrichovsky.
Premiere of FEU leadership conference at INTERSCHUTZ 2026
With the first FEU Leadership Conference during INTERSCHUTZ 2026 in Hanover, the Federation of European Fire Officers aims to bring together European fire chiefs in a premiere conference format on 3 and 4 June 2026. According to the organisation, more than 300 leaders from fire and civil protection agencies across Europe, as well as from international partner countries, are expected to attend. Like INTERSCHUTZ itself, the event will be held under the theme “Safeguarding Tomorrow” and aims to create a leading European strategic platform for those shaping the future of European fire services and civil protection.
In light of a convergence of pressures – including hybrid threats, geopolitical instability, digital vulnerabilities, extreme climate events, and rising expectations from citizens – the need for clear-headed, future-oriented leadership has never been greater.
Over the two conference days, the FEU will bring together senior representatives from the European Commission, NATO, national fire and civil protection agencies, and international fire service leaders from the United States, Australia, Singapore, and other partner countries to explore how European emergency services must evolve to remain capable, resilient, and strategically aligned in an increasingly disruptive world.
