Italy is one of the countries in the world most affected by natural catastrophes. The extraordinary variety of the Italian landscape, which switches rapidly from coasts to mountains, from plains to hills, in fact corresponds to an extreme mix of natural disasters. There are frequent volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, floods, storm surges and fires.

The impact of these disasters is greater due to the trend in population density disparity. In Italy, many heavily urbanised areas emerge in high-risk zones. This is shown in the examples of Naples, a city constructed at the feet and on the slopes of an active volcano; Venice, increasingly menaced by the sea; the “magnificent” Genoa, the city on which the most violent floods throughout the peninsula are concentrated with the greatest frequency.

The Italian Volunteer system in brief

In response to the scenario outlined by this data, Italian culture over the years has developed one of the most advanced response mechanisms to emergencies in the world. The National List registered with central Government offices is a census of over 800,000 volunteers who refer to a network of 57 National Associations active in various emergency sectors – from Civil Protection to Medical Assistance to Fire Fighting.

This “army of volunteers” is joined by the elite structures of the Italian Army, whose specialized corps – alpine, marine units, engineering units – are often involved in aid missions both on national and foreign territories.

Entrepreneurs of resilience

This great vivacity has important effects also on an entrepreneurial side. Our Bel Paese (beautiful country) boasts a solid economic network in terms of emergency too. A network in which, side by side, both long-established and promising start-up companies operate.

Italian companies are strongly oriented towards innovation and ready to compete on international markets, as well as look for new partnerships, with a view to developing original synergies that can capitalize on shared experiences.
